What is a Christian Worldview?

Some would say the 7 C's of History:

Creation-Curse-Catastrophe-Confusion-Christ-Cross-Consummation.

John Stonestreet (BreakPoint) makes clear some essentials of a worldview [1] >>

According to Stonestreet, "… one who may have influenced Protestant Evangelicalism more than any other towards worldview thinking is Francis Schaeffer. Schaeffer’s most significant contribution was bringing the concept of Christian worldview out of the academy to popular Christian thought."

I highly recommend Schaeffer's Complete Works:

Also, these two video series >>

I argue that Francis Schaeffer leaned toward strict Creationism:

Shouldn't a Christian Worldview include some basic doctrinal standards?

The Deity of Christ

Salvation by Grace

The Resurrection of Christ

The Gospel

Monotheism

Jesus is the only way to salvation

Jesus' virgin birth

Doctrine of the Trinity

What about questions like "What is Marriage?" and "What is a Woman?"

Let me know your criteria for the Christian Worldview:

The Wedding That Never Was

A Riddle ...

My father served in WWII.  My wife is ten years younger than I.  When my parents wed, they were seventeen years apart.  How old am I? (I hope you're laughing).  From Seattle Bride we learn this profound wisdom:

The Goldilocks Theory - “The ideal age to get married, with the least likelihood of divorce in the first five years, is 28 to 32,” says Carrie Krawiec, a marriage and family therapist at Birmingham Maple Clinic in Troy, Michigan. “Called the ‘Goldilocks theory,’ the idea is that people at this age are not too old and not too young.”  Krawiec explains that people should be “old enough” to understand the difference between true compatibility and puppy love, yet “young enough” that they’re not set in their ways and unwilling to make adjustments to habits and lifestyle.

Where do we get our moral notions regarding nuptial bliss?  According to Nancy Pearcey (Love Thy Body):

lf nature is teleological, and the human body is part of nature, then it is likewise  teleological.  It has a built-in purpose, part of which is expressed as the moral law.  We are morally obligated to treat people in a way that helps them fulfill their purpose.  This explains why biblical morality is not arbitrary.  Morality is the guidebook to fulfilling God's original purpose for humanity, the instruction manual for becoming the kind of person God intends us to be, the road map for reaching the human telos.  This is sometimes called natural law ethics because it tells us how to fulfill our true nature, how to become fully human. [1]

It is not the purpose or function for babies to have babies.  Babies don't raise other babies and teach them the four R's - Reading, 'Riting, 'Rithmetic (Maths) & Religion.  Omniculturalism, which values the true, good and beautiful from all cultures from all time, teaches us that weddings and marriage are proper.  Freddy should not marry a one-year-old.

Do you recall the version of the Golden Rule as stated by Confucius (d. 479 BC)?   "Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself."  When I was around twelve years old and living in Northern Virginia, we had a group riding bikes throughout the neighborhood.  One of the younger kids was tragically abducted.  He was later reunited with his parents.  I thank God that I was not the one taken.

You may have heard of the foolishness from Dr. Stephen Kershnar (SUNY -  Fredonia) regarding extreme conjugal relations.  If Kershnar's view becomes widespread, will trafficking and child abduction skyrocket?  Kershnar is the author of Total Collapse: The Case Against Morality and Responsibility.

Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father.   Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. (1 Tim. 5:1,2)

"Some Men I Know Are Really Women"

YES, that was a provocative title, but what are the biblical roles for men and women in marriage and the church? A good crowd from our church went to the Abilene Theology Conference (TX) recently where this was the topic.  Bruce Ware (God's Lesser Glory) was the speaker.

Biblical Foundations for Manhood and Womanhood (ed. by Wayne Grudem) has  chapters by Dr. Ware.  One review of the book states:

These writers explore key issues, including the interchangeability of male-female roles, the meaning of submission, and the historical novelty of egalitarian interpretations of Scripture. This book will demonstrate how some views of manhood and womanhood tamper with our understanding of God’s character and why the extremes of male domination and feminism destroy the beauty of our sexual differences-differences that celebrate the excellence of men and women as God created us.

If you are not familiar with the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, be sure to check it out and learn more about the Danvers and Nashville statements.

Ryan Anderson (Heritage Foundation) has written When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment.  The book takes on the transgender movement relative to psychology, philosophy, biology & public policy.

Another helpful book is God and the TransgenderDebate by Andrew Walker (Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission) which deals with questions like:
  • *     Can someone be transgender and Christian?
  • *     Should I mind if people who are biologically the other sex are in my restroom?
  • *     Is it true that Christian teaching is harmful and can lead to depression and higher suicide rates?

What was my question to Dr. Ware?  "Young Earth or Old Earth & why?"  Plz. get your copy of Is a Young Earth Possible? right away!  Here are some talks from the 2018 Abilene Theology Conference.

Marriage is Good

Why get married?  What is the purpose of marriage?

Part of the plan of marriage is having kids.  When the Lord confirmed his covenant with Noah we read the following:
Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. ... As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it" (Gen. 9:1,7).
How did Rebekah's sisters bless her?
Our sister, may you increase    to thousands upon thousands;may your offspring possess    the cities of their enemies (Gen. 24:60).
When was the last time you read the book of Ruth, chapter four?  Have you considered the implications for marriage?  A wedding should have witnesses (Ruth 4:9. cf. Gen. 29:22).  It should be legal (Ruth 4:2, 11).  Marriage is between one man and one woman - in this case Ruth and Boaz.

Sadly marriage is under attack from many corners in our world (music, TV, courts etc.).  The Lord called holy matrimony “very good” (Genesis 1:26-31).

Also, think about Paul's directive, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word" (Eph. 5:25, 26).  Is not being made holy a good thing?

How does spousal abuse arise?  "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them" (Col. 3:19).  Contrast this with what it says in the Qur'an (4:34):
Men are in charge of women by what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient ... But those from whom you fear arrogance - advise them; forsake them in bed; and, strike them.

Peter would never say such a thing but instead gives us this command, "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers" (1 Pet. 3:7).

Did Adam Support Gay Marriage?

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”  Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them.  And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.  The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field.  But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.  So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.  And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. (Gen. 2:18-22 ESV).

Male and female are complementary to each other.  Only the male/female pair reproduce.  A masculine man brings certain qualities to a marriage (1 man + 1 woman 4 LIFE) and a feminine woman brings other characteristics that make a marriage work.  When Adam named the animals he noticed the male-female pairing.  Where was Adam’s compatible and complementary female counterpart?  Adam believed in complementarianism, not gay marriage.

Genesis continues, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh (Gen. 2:24).

A man leaves his Father and Mother.  Neither father & father nor mother & mother constitute parents.  Same sex couples do not become one flesh.  Only the male/female pair can do this.
Robert Reilly has written a fascinating book on the morality of same-sex relationships, Making Gay Okay: How Rationalizing Homosexual Behavior Is Changing Everything.  Reilly has shown that a reasonable man or woman can understand that same-sex couples are ethically incorrect.

In 2009, President Barack Obama held a meeting to celebrate the gay rights movement.  Obama said this about alternative lifestyle activist Franklin Kameny, “We are proud of you, Frank, and we are grateful to you for your leadership.” [1]  Kameny said the following in 2008:

Let us have more and better enjoyment of the more and better sexual perversions, by whatever definition, by more and more consenting adults…  If bestiality with consenting animals provides happiness to some people, let them pursue their happiness.  That is Americanism in action. [2]

In Plato’s Laws, the Athenian states his position:
…our citizens must not be worse than fowls and many other animals which are produced in large broods, and which live chaste and celibate lives without sexual intercourse until they arrive at the age for breeding; and when they reach this age they pair off, as instinct moves them, male with female and female with male; and thereafter they live in a way that is holy and just, remaining constant to their first contracts of love: surely our citizens should at least be better than these animals.

In Book 1 of Plato’s Laws, the Athenian affirms,
…I think that the pleasure is to be deemed natural which arises out of the intercourse between men and women; but that the intercourse of men with men, or of women with women, is contrary to nature, and that the bold attempt was originally due to unbridled lust. The Cretans are always accused of having invented the story of Ganymede and Zeus because they wanted to justify themselves in the enjoyment of unnatural pleasures

Philosopher Immanuel Kant proposed his Categorical Imperative:  If it’s right, it’s right for all.  If gay is good and all practiced that maxim, then there would be no more babies.  Kant rejected homosexual conduct.

Pleasure is indeed part of marriage (Song of Solomon).  But worshipping pleasure is a vain pursuit.  The Pleasure Principle can lead to destruction.   Consider the parable of Sam & Dave.  Sam and Dave are very good friends.  Sam loves to hit Dave in the head with a baseball bat.  Dave loves to hit Sam in the head with a baseball bat.  They practice this habitual pleasure for many years.  Sam & Dave never become one flesh (1 Cor. 6:16).

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (Eph. 6:1-3 ESV)

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor. 6:9-11 ESV)
