Often, after a person is born again and asks, "What shall I do next?" he is given a list of things, usually of a limited nature, and primarily negative. Often he is given the idea that if he does not do this series of things ... he will be spiritual. This is not so. The true Christian life, true spirituality, is not merely a negative not-doing of any small list of things. Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong (d. 1971) and His All Stars were Goodwill Ambassadors to Europe and Asia. In 1958, upon landing at New York's Idlewild Airport, Satch was directed to go through Customs which was not required for ambassadors. Some of the luggage contained ganja. Richard "Muler" Nixon (d. 1994) arrived and the following scene ensued:
Nixon: "Satchmo, what are you doing here?"
Satch: "Well, Pops, I just came back from my goodwill tour of Asia and they told me I had to stand in this line for Customs."
Nixon: "Ambassadors don't have to go through Customs and the Vice President of the United States will carry your bags to the exit. Do you have a car waiting?"
Thus, a catastrophe was circumvented. Apparently, the Veep was oblivious to the contraband.

When Christ cried out "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mt. 27:46), he quotes Ps. 22:1 which is shorthand for referring to the whole psalm which predicts the Crucifixion. We read this in Psalm 22:24,
For he has not despised or scorned
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.
Not "doubt and a feeling of absolutely abandonment," but rather faith and hope (cf. Heb. 5:7). We are not saved by good works, "he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5).
